Shedding Light on Hair Shedding:

  1. We all shed hair everyday and everyone has their "normal" amount of hair shedding.

  • 95% of hair follicles are in the Anagen (growing) phase. That means that there are about 5% in the Telogen (falling out) phase. That is why people shed hair daily.

  • A client might notice more hair shedding on shampoo days if they go more than 2-3 days without shampooing their hair.

  • There are many factors that can contribute to 'abnormal' hair shedding, including genetics, hormones, and lifestyle.

2. Abnormal hair shedding is called Telogen effluvium (TE)

  • This is a scary amount of hair shedding that the client can have concerns about.

  • This TE shedding will usually last about 3-6 months, but can last longer depending on the trigger that started the hair shedding.

  • Any hair shedding lasting longer than 6 months is called Chronic Telogen effluvium.

3. There are 100's of reasons that a client can have TE. Here are a few:

  • Postpartum - 50% of women will have TE during postpartum.

  • Hormone imbalance - Thyroid | Menopause | Autoimmune

  • Stressful event - Anxiety | Depression | Death in the family | Divorce | Surgery

  • Nutrient deficiency - Vitamin D | Iron | Vitamin B's |

  • Scalp disorders - Psoriasis | Eczema | Folliculitis

  • Medications

  • Gut issues

4. Communication Strategies to help the client.
